  2. The serial number, stamped on the bottom of the butt strap, should start with the letter S, T or U (let me know what it is and we can determine the year). The crane lock up on that one should be a spring loaded plunger that comes down from the top of the frame and there should be a small screw up there.
  3. The serial number listings by month presented below were developed by Scott Duff, a recognized authority on and author of a series of books on the M1 Garand. The following information can be found in the books 'The M1 Garand: WWII' and 'The M1 Garand Serial Numbers and Data Sheets' found at Fulton Armory, and are used here with Mr. Duff's permission.

HARRINGTON & RICHARDSON, INC.

One of the oldest manufacturers of firearms in the United States. Original Harrington and Richardson started in 1871 and was in existence until 1986. For all those years, the company was located in Worcester, Massachusetts. After the original company closed, in 1991 a new company, H&R 1871 was formed in Gardner, Massachusetts. In 2000, H&R 1871 was purchased by Marlin Firearms. The assets of Marlin, including H&R 1871 and its subsidiary, New England Firearms (NEF), were bought by Remington in 2007. H&R's corporate office is now located with Remington and Marlin in Madison, North Carolina, while the production facilities are at the former Remington plant in Ilion, New York. New England Firearms brand has been used for marketing some H&R products in recent years. See separate listing under New England Firearms (NEF). H&R ceased production in 2015.

SHOTGUNS

H&R manufactured 'private-branded' or 'trade-branded' H&R Handy-Guns for other distributors. One variation has ESSEX GUN WORKS on left side of receiver. Another has HIBBARD stamped on left side and MODEL W.H. stamped on right; holster with identical stampings was also available. Most have nickel-plated receivers and are serial numbered within the same ranges as, and have other characteristics identical to, regular-production H&R Handy-Guns, by variation. None of those inspected during this research had any markings identifying H&R as original manufacturer. Anecdotal evidence suggests H&R manufactured a Handy-Gun for an independent telephone company in Colorado; none were located during this research. These materials are copyright 1998 by Eric M. Larson.
